A curved sharp edged line starts at the very front, flowing through the middle section, slightly bending down after the A pillar and then rising up again at the rear wheel arches to follow its way back until the diffuser.

The same curve language is also applied to the greenhouse and the design of the windows.

The front has an aggressive look with the traditional Audi grille. The air intakes are shaped like the headlights to create a coherent feeling.

The rear section is very organic with defined curves and subtle details, tail lights are designed to have integrated air outtakes underneath them to avoid any unnecessary details.

The sleek design of the rear volume is defined by the dual exhaust tail pipes located at the very sides and by the dark surfaces of the diffuser.

Another feature is the roof that integrates both the windshield and the rear window into a single continuous glass surface, with an air intake at the bottom of the rear window.

Initially, Audi S5 was launched in 2008. At that time, it was exclusively available in the form of V8-powered vehicle with either a 6-speed manual conduction or 6-speed automation. Audi also equipped with A3 Clubsport with a stiff sport suspension that reduces the ride height by 1.42 inches and fitted it with the automaker’s drive select driving dynamics system and magnetic ride adaptive damper control to maximize handling when necessary and ride comfort when not.

Visually, the car’s goal is simple: Get attention. This it accomplishes well, for better or worse. The white-and-red paint scheme is eye catching, especially the No. 8 on the side. It’s also hard to miss the giant front grille that brings memories of the Q7 V12 TDI Concept from the 2007 Detroit Auto Show or the massive honeycombs in the lower fascia. The rear fascia features two giant exhaust pipes that Audi says generate a “sonorous soundtrack,” and there’s a DTM-style spoiler mounted on the rear window. Rounding out the exterior changes are flared doors and quarter panels, Xenon headlights with LED running lights, bolt-on wheelarch extensions, and 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels.

The interior didn’t undergo the same radical transformation as the exterior. The most notable changes over the standard A3 are the racing-style sport bucket seats, TDI Power-badged illuminated door sills, aluminum shiftgate, and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The door panels and floormats also have been redesigned.

The result is that the A3 Clubsport weighs in at 3252 lb, is 0.63 in. longer than a standard 166.85-in.-long three-door A3, sits 1.42 in. lower with a height of 54.53 in., and boasts a wider track — 61.73/61.14 in. front/rear, increases of 1.34 and 1.81 in., respectively. And it would fit in perfectly parked at a funny angle at a late-night enthusiast meet.

Like this concept, the Q5 will ride on the A4/S5′s longitudinal-engine, “transmission-forward” platform. Concept engine is a 240-horsepower, 369 pound-foot longitudinally mounted six-cylinder turbodiesel with an ultra-low emission system that Audi says will meet the European Union’s 2014 standards. U.S.-spec Q5s will probably launch with the 3.2-liter V-6. The Cross Cab is shown with a full-time quattro system and electronic ride adjustment.

At 181.2 inches long and 75.2 inches wide, it’s about the size of the A5/S5 coupe, so if you imagine it lowered by a good ten inches, you’re also looking at a vague hint of the 2010 A5/S5 convertible. Overall height of the concept is 64.2 inches, on the low side of small crossover ride heights. Gee-whiz features include Google Earth software for the navigation system, which has a high-resolution display and 3-dimensional maps. It comes with an internet connection so that drivers can tune in on traffic, weather and air-quality information.

With the ’09 Q5 and the smaller Q3, previewed by the Cross Coupe quattro at the Shanghai show earlier this year, Audi plans to triple its crossover SUV lineup within a few short years.

Now, ahead of Tokyo, the wait is over. Images and details of Audi’s newest concept are out. Labeled the Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro concept, the vehicle is a three-door, four-seat hatch with an outwardly aggressive attitude and stance. Audi’s bold, deep front grille is present along with glaring, narrow-eyed headlamps and deep lower air intakes. Aluminum accent trim adorns the pillars and roofline of the car and the coupe-like profile is neat and tidy. At the rear, two largish exhaust tips slot through the rear valance and a subtle roof spoiler is fitted.

The Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro is said to be a hybrid, with a 1.4-liter TFSI engine that produces around 150 horsepower for the front wheels, while a 41 horsepower electric motor is mounted on the rear axle – good for 7.8 second 0 to 60 mph runs and a top speed of just over 124 mph. As a full hybrid, the concept is able to be powered by the plug-in electric motor alone, which runs off lithium-ion batteries. All the standard hybrid technologies such as engine start/stop and brake regeneration are present, and a range of 62 miles is available on battery power alone before needing a recharge. An S-tronic dual-clutch gearbox gets the power directed to its destination and although the concept is a hybrid, gasoline and diesel options ranging from 1.2- to 2.0-liters are said to be adaptable.

Keeping with the concept’s sporting nature, the A1 Metroproject Quattro will get the magnetic ride shock absorbers as found on Audi’s own R8 and TT and 12.3-inch brake rotors tucked behind 18-inch wheels. Inside, the interior is somewhat reminiscent of the Audi TT, with a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel, protruding air vents, lots of aluminum trim, paddle shifters, and a clear instrument display with a large tachometer and speedometer. A red engine start button resides on the center console between driver and passenger and red accent stitching adorns otherwise black upholstery. Especially cool are the individual bucket rear seats and, in a “Gee, whiz” sort of way, the battery compartment, visible in the rear cargo area through a plexiglass cover. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the cell phone that comes with the A1 Metroproject Quattro — it’s a portable, remote version of Audi’s MMI in-car interface, key fob, sat-nav unit, audio and video player, and remote car security camera all in one device. Take that iPhone!

Expect a production version of the A1 to arrive sometime in 2009, with multiple engine options and in two, three, and five-door configurations. A convertible edition and S1 performance variant, possibly with the automaker’s quattro, are almost certainly assured as well.

All in all, we’re impressed and can’t wait to see the Audi A1 Metroproject Quattro concept in the flesh at the Tokyo Motor Show, October 24-25. Of course, you’ll want to keep it tuned to Motor Trend Online for all the latest updates live from the show floor on this and other concept debuts.

The resulting 2.5-liter five-cylinder is already being used, sort of, in the 150-horsepower Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. But the quattro TT-Lambo gets a bespoke cylinder head and a turbocharger said to be capable of making it the most powerful TT ever–at more than 350 horsepower.

When will we see it? That’s unknown right now, but 2009 is a well-educated guess for release date.

What does it replace? Nothing. The hard-core TT Quattrosport, a 240-horsepower, 1.8-liter turbo with no rear seat, built near the end of the old TT’s production run and never imported to the U.S., is the only thing that comes close.

Apart from the engine, what else will we get? A six-speed manual gearbox for sure. A new DSG for transverse-engine Audis isn’t ready to go, so that’s an issue. Expect extra wings and spoilers and a brake upgrade, with optional ceramic brakes possible. Wheels will be 19- or 20-inch.

A5 Sportback: A four-door hatch, not quite as wagonlike as the A4 Avant, this is the production version of the Roadjet 2006 Detroit show car.

DSG gearboxes: Dual-shift gearboxes specific to Audi’s new longitudinal-engine cars (differentials will be moved forward of the gearbox) will have six or seven gears, depending on the power, and may replace automatics. Look for them in the next A4, A6, and A8, plus in the new A5 and Q5.

Much like the difference between a merely competent steed and the legendary Seabiscuit, there’s quick and then there’s quick. If you’re a driver looking for breathtaking performance in an ultra-performance sport sedan, then there’s little need to look further than the Audi RS4. Gobbling distance with ruthless speed and efficiency, the RS4 is endowed with all the traits that leave enthusiasts salivating like babies.

Other German manufacturers have performed like straight-A students in this segment, but the RS4 indicates that Audi did its homework. Ridiculously powerful engine? Check. The RS4 sedan came ready for the smackdown thanks to a V8 that, with more than 400 horsepower, offered more muscle than a WWE cage match — just what you’d expect from a car in this rarefied class. Superior ride and handling? Check. Audi’s runner even managed to best the rear-wheel-drive competition by a nose thanks to its all-wheel-drive system. And the RS4′s extraordinarily supportive seats meant your back wouldn’t ever beg you to plead “time out” from all the festivities.

Downsides? The RS4′s compact dimensions added welcome nimbleness, but they also resulted in rear seats that were somewhat on the cramped side. And then there was its rarity, as it was sold for just two years. With patience, though, one will certainly be able to find a used model. Price? Well, it’s expensive. But don’t let that stop you. Retirement plan, schmetirement plan. An object of desire if ever there was one, the Audi RS4 is the type of sport sedan that puts the fun in reckless spending.

Most Recent Audi RS4

The Audi RS4 sport sedan was sold in North America for the 2007 and ’08 model years and was a product of Quattro GmbH, Audi’s performance division. (There’s some inherent confusion here, as Audi brands its all-wheel-drive system “Quattro” as well.) Essentially, the RS4 was an amplified version of the S4 sedan, itself already a performance variant of the third-generation Audi A4 sold from 2006-’08. Highlights included a higher-output V8, specific suspension tuning with Dynamic Ride Control, modified all-wheel-drive components, more powerful brakes, special 19-inch wheels and high-performance tires. Identifying the RS4 was more aggressive exterior styling, including flared fenders and a unique rear deck lid spoiler. Overall, this super sport sedan had a look that said “performance” without shouting it.

The RS4 came in just one well-equipped trim level. Heated leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control and bi-HID headlights all make an appearance on its standard features list. Motivating the Audi RS4 was a high-performance 4.2-liter V8 good for 420 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque; the engine offered 80 more horsepower than you’d find in the S4. Only one transmission was offered: a six-speed manual. Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system made sure the wheels never broke their kiss with the road.

This Audi’s cabin placed an emphasis on clean lines. Though there was the requisite supple leather, plushness wasn’t the focus; rather, the car’s interior championed a pared-down aesthetic that favored sleekness over opulence. The RS4′s sport seats looked good and felt good, offering bolstering that cradled you in the corners without ever being too overwhelming. There was ample room for those in front, but rear seat passengers typically found their accommodations a bit cramped.

But of course, this sport sedan was all about performance. At its debut, the Audi RS4 seemed to have a couple of strikes against it. Weighing in at about 4,000 pounds, it was one of the more porcine players in the class. And its design placed the V8 engine heavily over its front axle, compromising steering feel and weight distribution. But somehow the RS4 managed to transcend all this the way a Teflon politician transcends a scandal.

Certainly helping matters was the Dynamic Ride Control system. DRC linked the diagonally opposite front and rear dampers with a gas-charged reservoir to allow more compliance when front and rear dampers were compressed at the same time, ensuring a comfortable highway ride with minimal compromise during performance driving.

In reviews, we found that the RS4′s handling was near perfect, with the sort of steely composure that remains undaunted no matter what. Acceleration was explosive, shifts were quick and a broad torque band ensured that there was ample power underfoot for all situations. In testing, we measured a 0-60-mph time of just 4.3 seconds.

Past Audi RS4 Models

It should be noted that although the RS4 was new to the United States when it debuted, there was an older RS4 briefly sold in Europe. Sold for 2000 as an Avant wagon only, it came with a 375-hp, turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine.
